August Town hunt win against Wadadah
Leaders August Town could take a giant step towards a return to top-flight football with a win against a desperate Wadadah outfit at Jarrett Park todayt at 5:00 pm as the return fixtures of the play-offs begin.
In the other game, Rivoli United and Volvo clash at the Spanish Town Prison Oval at 3:30 pm.
August Town, the urban champion, lead the four-team table with seven points from three games ahead of St Catherine-based Rivoli United on five, Volvo of St Ann on four and St James outfit Wadadah at the bottom pointless.
August Town, who last played in the Premier League in the 2009/2010 season, have surprised many with their ageing team by winning two of their three games, and more importantly, their last four points came from away games.
The Christopher Bender-coached team will have two home games and are now highly fancied to be one of the two teams advancing to the nation’s top league.
A win today against Wadadah and a lost for Volvo would put August Town on the cusp of qualification with 10 points, which would be the maximum Volvo can attain from their last two games.
Anything but a win for the Daniel Ricketts-coached Wadadah would see the end of their campaign, although mathematically, they could still finish second with six points if the game between Rivoli and Volvo is drawn and both teams lose their last two games to them and August Town.
This game at home is a must-win game for Wadadah who will be hunting maximum nine points which could still carry them through.
In their first meeting, August Town clipped Wadadah 1-0 courtesy of a Rohan Williams goal, but the home team will have revenge on their minds and will make it a most difficult game for August Town.
At the Prison Oval, home team Rivoli United fresh from the 2-1 win over Wadadah, could also move a step closer to qualification with a win over Volvo United.
In the first round, both teams played to a 1-1 draw at Drax Hall and Rivoli, especially playing at home, are fancied to secure maximum points but not for one minute can they take Volvo lightly who will be looking to leapfrog them in the standing.
