Thompson romps home at Seafreight Amateur Golf Championships
After a two under par 70 on Friday, and 80 on Saturday, Paul Thompson played a steady final round of 73 to take the title of national amateur champion at the Seafreight National Amateur Golf Championships, which ended at the Caymanas Golf Club yesterday.
The former national representative had four birdies in the round that cemented his hold on the coveted title of best local amateur, and finished with 223. Jonathan Newnham had steady rounds of 78, 78 and 75, and finished second with 231. Sean Morris was third with 233, edging out Jamaica Golf Association president Wayne Chai Chong by one shot.
George Hugh captured the Flight A title with rounds of 84, 82, 80 (246) ahead of Peter Chin, who finished on 249. Paul Seaton was third with 251.
Stainton Baker improved his fortune by shooting 88 to end with a total of 269 in the B Flight. Delroy Alcott placed second with 272.
In his usual fashion, Dennis Atkinson led the Super Senior 0-12 group from the first round and bagged the Super Senior Championship title with 243, five shots ahead of Philip Wilson (248). Opeton Marshall finished third on 249.
Khaleel Azan finished the day on 268 to take the Flight B Super Senior category. Carlysle Hudson had a total of 302 in the C Flight.
Michele Gabay finished the tournament on 246 (80, 79, 87) to seal her position as the Ladies’ Open Flight winner. Crystal Gayle shot 95, 93, 90 for a total of 278 and topped the Ladies’ A Flight. The Ladies’ B Flight was won by Celsa Nuno, with a total of 294.
The 15 & Under Boys’ division was won by Jordan Lowe (257). Tyler Fitt was second with 266.
Jack Stein came out on top with 244, followed by Justin Burrowes on 246 in the Boys’ 13 & Under category. Kaitlin Robertson won the 15 & Under Junior Female category (265) and Kei Harris took the 13 & Under Junior Female title with 251.
In the two-day Seafreight Flights Classic, Lindy Bartley added six strokes to Saturday’s score of 67 to close his round with 73 yesterday, for an overall total of 140 in the 0-6 Flights. Phillip Gooden shot rounds of 81 and 80 to take the 7-11 Flight with 161. Edwin Lowe was second with (80, 89) 169.
