Elite golfers gear up for Seafreight National Amateur Champs
Jamaican golf’s brightest stars will be out this weekend for the Seafreight National Amateur Golf Championships, one of the premier events on the 2013-2014 tournament calendar.
The Caymanas Golf & Country Club will be the backdrop against which the best local golfers will display their skills and talent in a test to determine Jamaica’s best amateur. The 2012 champion Fabian Campbell has since turned professional, along with the second place finisher Wesley Brown.
In the line-up for the Open Flight are JGA President Wayne Chai Chong, Robert Chin, Rory Jardine, Sean Morris, Jonathan Newnham and Greg Chong. Michele Gabay, Kei Harris and Sherisse Walker are among the female national representatives, who will be in contention for the ladies’ title.
Golfers in the super senior category include Dennis Atkinson, Hamar Dayes, Maurice Foster, Opeton Marshall and Fred Sutherland, who have all represented Jamaica in the regional championships.
A strong contingent of junior players will be out on the weekend, including Justin Burrowes, Jordan Lowe, Tyler Fitt, Kaitlin Robertson and Jack Stein.
The selectors for the national junior and senior teams to the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships will be out at the Seafreight National Amateur Golf Championships to assess the progress being made by the members of the Elite Squad. The Championships, apart from being the event that determines the national champion, will also serve as a warm up for the National Trials, which takes place from June 6-9, 2013.
