France’s Malouda donates to One Love Foundation
FRENCH footballer Florent Malouda who will be a guest of Red Stripe Jamaica to host the Heineken UEFA Champions League viewing party in the National Indoor Centre on Saturday, will donate his fee to his charity — One Love Foundation.
Malouda, 32, the out-of-favour Chelsea player, who is expected in the island this afternoon, said he is trying to be involved in projects as much as possible.
“I’d prefer to be on the pitch playing, but when I had this opportunity to be part of the Heineken final event in Kingston, I was very happy. I love Jamaica and I have lots of friends here,” said Malouda via email.
Malouda, who has Caribbean heritage, having been born in French Guiana, first visited Jamaica in 2007 and has fallen in love with the island.
“I came here in 2007 for the first time and I know Jamaicans are real football fans. They support their teams, especially premier league teams,” noted Malouda, who is capped 80 times for France with nine goals.
The UEFA Champions League final is the most prestigious event in European club football and will be contested by German teams Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund at Wembley, England, and Malouda is not at all surprised.
“I wasn’t surprised because German football is becoming a reference and they have been working on their young players’ development. I have to admit that the first legs were impressive,” said the Frenchman.
Last year fans watched at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston as Malouda’s English club Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich on penalties for the title and he believes that’s the biggest moment in his football career.
“It was like a dream I was chasing since the academy that finally came true. The best moment of my football career. The favourite moment is when you receive your medal and when the team is getting ready to lift the trophy. It will stay forever in my memory,” he reiterated.
As for his pick to win the trophy, Malouda believes Bayern Munich will be third time lucky, and will be hard to deny.
“In the season Bayern was unplayable and they would deserve the trophy because they have been in the final three times in the last four years. But Dortmund will be a tough opposition anyway.”
