Dane Nelson to shine on Classy Prospect
UNBEATEN Jamaica 2,000 Guineas winner Willie Goldsmith has sidestepped Saturday’s Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup in preference to today’s less competitive $786,500 LR ‘Bob’ Mayall Memorial Cup, Open Allowance feature at Caymanas Park.
The ‘Bob’ Mayall highlighter also includes the Jamaica 1,000 Guineas winner Selectabook, and has attracted quite a competitive field of seven going 1,600 metres. Post time for the feature is set at approximately 5:05 pm, with first post at 12:40 pm.
Tuning up for the Jamaica Derby, Willie Goldsmith has been well drilled for his first taste of three-year-old and upward competitors who are some of the best at the distance. Nonetheless, judging from his preparation and his convincing demolition of his age group in his four victories to date, the chestnut gelded son of Traditional has shown enough quality that could prove equal to the somewhat
difficult task he faces from seasoned campaigners.
Prepared for the races by Patrick Chang for owners WB Racing, Willie Goldsmith, bred by Michael Lyncook, will come in at 54.0kg for Shane Ellis.
Chief among his rivals will be the top-weighted Classy Prospect, trained by Wayne DaCosta. A six-year-old front-running dark bay gelded son of Saint Appeal out of Good Prospect (Texas Prospector) bred and owned by Francis Barnett, Edison Chai & Louis Lyn, Classy Prospect carried top weight three races ago and beat a reasonably good field going 1,600 metres by 8 1/4 lengths in a time of 1:38.3 minutes.
This is not a better field than the one he upended on last, and he is expected to be in the heat at the tail end of the run with Dane Nelson, who was aboard when he last won, returning to the saddle.
The lightly weighted and in form four-year-old bay colt Timeforarms, trained by Fitzroy Glispie, who also part-owned the colt with Gary G Lee-Sin, is another who is expected to be a serious factor, but it is Aventura, another lightly weighted and in form four-year-old, who has already won twice over the distance in sub 1:40-minute times that could cause most concern. By Storm Craft out of Galaxy Girl (Natural Selection) and bred by Allan Flowers, Aventura has been also well prepared for another attempt at victory by trainer Gresford Smith and will again be ridden by Dick Cardenas.
It is therefore anticipated that he will be gathering a storm after setting down for the drive to make each and every runner in the field work for whatever success each envisages.
The imported seven-year-old gelding New Kingston, who recently upset his younger rivals in a smart time of 1:26.2 minutes going 1,400 metres, looks to have found his racing legs again and like his younger rivals and stablemate Classy Prospect, New Kingston is ideally suited to 1,600 metres. Returning to the grade well in at the weights with a mere 52.0kg for lightweight rider Leo Miller, this makes him a fearful customer after raising his head from the slumber from which he has awakened on last to remind that he is no spent force.
