Countdown to The Observer food awards: G’s BBQ
G’s BBQ, owned and operated by Gillian and Gariel Ferguson, is known for solid, unpretentious comfort food, sinfully delicious desserts and innovative beverages. Add to this the popular end-of-month Pig Roast which delivers pork so succulent that finding a table can prove as challenging as feigning indifference to the crackling.
Our Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards judges, some familiar with the country’s premier ‘pig roast man’ others like Gregory Mayne amazed that ‘pork this good had never been eaten by me’, enjoyed the type of comfort food oft reserved for family gatherings. Ferguson who alongside his suckling pig introduced a smoked barbecue pork which will soon be on supermarket shelves, a mesculen green salad (from the Family Garden), mac and goat cheese, Thai curried pumpkin, roast tomatoes with mushroom, carrots and herb-roasted sweet potatoes, had us all applauding his seasoning hand. There were thirst quenchers too, from passionfruit Craft Soda to a 3G.
The night’s ultimate comfort would come in three ‘bites’ on a single plate: chocolate decadence with bittersweet mousse and a hazlenut crumble. Crispy rum and raisin bread pudding and a lychee and mango sorbet. Who knew that Gillian Ferguson could whip up desserts so formidable?
The service, intimate setting and cost makes G’s BBQ a must-visit.
