August Town aim for second win in NPL play-offs
Early leaders August Town will be aiming to maintain their advantage when they travel to Spanish Town Prison Oval to play Rivoli United, while Wadadah host Volvo FC as the National Premier League playoffs continue at 3:30 pm today.
August Town secured the only win on match day one, edging Wadadah 1-0 and jumped to the top of the standings, and an away win against St Catherine team Rivoli United would put them in control of the four-team group.
August Town currently lead the group on three points ahead of both Rivoli United and Volvo on one point each, with Wadadah pointless.
August Town, boasting several veteran players with National Premier League experience in Craig White, Kevin Wilson, Gerald Neil, Richard Hoo, Chauncey Delahaye, plus some young guns in Michael Spence, Rohan Williams, Nicholas Smith, Fabian Anderson and the outstanding goalkeeper Diego Haughton, are expected to give another good display.
But Rivoli United will be hungry for three points, having dropped two crucial points in a 1-1 draw with Volvo on Sunday, and the likes of Devon Hodges, Ricardo Knight, Fidel Anderson and Fabian Gordon will make it very difficult for August Town.
It should be an interesting encounter and it will be important to see how the ageing legs of the August Town players stand up to the pressure of the home team hunting three valuable points.
Meanwhile, at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in St James, home team Wadadah will be looking to rebound from the opening-day loss with victory against Volvo of St Ann.
Wadadah, the western champions, turned in a dominant second-half display against August Town, but failed to find the net and the Daniel Ricketts-coached outfit could get it right and kick-start their campaign.
Wadadah’s playmaker Mario Swaby, formerly of Portmore United and Tivoli Gardens fame, was substituted early in their last game and remains doubtful. Loxley Thomas will again pull the strings from midfield with the speedy Anthony Walker, a former national Under-17 player from Rusea’s High could be the secret weapon coming off the bench. Keneil Moodie was on the bench while Oliver Trail will have to be watched.
Volvo, who fought back gallantly against Rivoli, will be fighting once again to the end and could upset the more fancied Wadadah team. Landino Hibbert, Jamal Studdart, Roshane Henry, Andre Green and Everton Marsh should lead the charge once again.
