Volvo recover to earn 1-1 draw with Rivoli
DRAX HALL, St Ann — Volvo of St Ann recovered to hold Rivoli United of St Catherine to 1-1 in their Premier League play-off game at Drax Hall yesterday.
Devon Hodges opened the scoring for Rivoli in the 11th minute as Landino Hibbert equalised for the home team in 46th.
Hodges scored his goal from a curled free-kick over the wall to beat Volvo custodian Ruel Wilson.
Volvo was denied the equaliser by the crossbar shortly after Everton Marsh’s shot hit the crossbar. Volvo finally levelled the score as Hibbert fired home at the end of a Marsh and Roshane Henry combination.
The second half saw Volvo dominating the play by launching a number of attacks, but failing to convert. Jamal Studdart got a number of chances but it seemed he left his scoring boots at home. Rivoli substitute defender Fidel Anderson denied the Volvo attack on a number of occasions by breaking up a number of offensive moves
Rivoli coach Calvert Fitz-Gerald was pleased with the draw. “This is our worst game and I am so happy that we came out with a draw. I can’t put my finger on what went wrong, but we are looking for an improved performance when we play August Town on Wednesday,” he said.
Volvo’s David Pryce said, “The team showed good character to get back in the game.”
Both teams, former top-flight campaigners, are attempting to gain promotion back to Premier League, now sponsred by local brewery giant Red Stripe.
On Wednesday, Volvo will travel to Montego Bay to play Wadadah, who went down 0-1 to August Town in yesterday’s game.
