First blood – August Town leap to front of Premier League play-offs
AUGUST Town chiselled out a 1-0 win over Wadadah at the UWI Bowl and grabbed pole position in the Jamaica Football Federation All-Island Confederation Play-offs.
Rohan Williams fired home in the 20th minute as August Town jumped to the top of the four-team group on three points ahead of both Rivoli United and Volvo on one point each following their 1-1 draw at Drax Hall.
Although it was not the best of displays, it was a fighting win for home team August Town as their next three games will be on the road.
Winning coach Christopher Bender was just happy for the points as they push for a return to Premier League football for the first time since 2010.
“Overall, I thought the team played in patches but that is understandable. It’s about results now not about performance,” Bender pointed out.
“We have three away games so we need to see how the players came out of this game and go to Rivoli and get a result,” he added.
Meanwhile, Daniel Ricketts was clearly disappointed with what he described as his team’s lack of fighting spirit on the field.
“The first half we were a bit flat, but we regrouped in the second half (and) we got our chances, but the goals just didn’t come,” said Ricketts.
“The most disappointing aspect is the attitude of the players. They lacked fight out there and it didn’t seem like we wanted to play the first 45 minutes. Some of the players were not into it,” he noted.
August Town started with four veterans in their mid-30s in Kevin ‘Pele’ Wilson up front, captain Chauncey Delahaye in the central midfield with Gerald Neil and Craig ‘Warlord’ White at the heart of the defence.
But there were also a nice blend of youth in Michael Spence, a former Tivoli Gardens prolific youth player, Fabian Anderson, the outstanding goalkeeper Diego Haughton, Mark Grant, Kurt Richards, Williams and Nicholas Smith.
Wadadah, fresh from eliminating former Premier League kingpin Reno in the Western Confederation play-off, started with the much-travelled veteran Loxley Thomas in midfield alongside the wily Mario Swaby of Kingston College and Portmore United fame.
Oliver Trail, formerly of Village, Curtis Palmer, Damian Reid and Damien Jackson also got the start for the green and yellow St James outfit, which was assisted by coach Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis.
But, as expected, home team August Town came out running and took the lead courtesy of a good strike from Williams in the 20th minute.
August Town dictated the proceedings for the remainder of the half, but the second period was a different story as weary legs set in.
“First of all, the goals came at a very good time in the game. Our condition is OK, but when you play a season with 30 games, and then on the back of that are the play-offs, it will be difficult, so we have to change the players and keep them fresh,” said Bender.
The play-offs continue on Wednesday with Wadadah hosting Volvo of St Ann and August Town travelling to St Catherine’s Rivoli United.
