My Kingston – Kevin Wyre (stage name Wyre)
Popular Kenyan dancehall and reggae act Wyre is experiencing The Rock’s many treasures. While anticipating shoot day when he will record his newest track with Jamaican ‘It’-girl Alaine, the charming, unassuming artiste sat down with SO at Tuff Gong Studios to dish deets on his new album and how his visit to Kingston has been going.
How has Kingston been so far?
The visit to Bob Marley Museum was amazing: the history and hearing what he went through, that was special. The food here is spicy and I’m trying to adjust to that. The people are warm and loving, everybody is friendly. I noticed that from the airport.
What have you eaten so far?
I had stew chicken at Hot Pot Restaurant in New Kingston. We had dinner at Tracks and Records; I had jerk pork, which I enjoyed.
What is your beverage of choice?
I keep it natural; I enjoy orange juice.
What cologne are you splashing?
Paco Rabanne 1 Million.
Share the title of the last book you read.
The Bible.
What was the last bit of music you listened to that you really enjoyed?
Apart from my song with Alaine, I have a whole mix of reggae and dancehall on my iPod. You name it — from Chronixx to Tarrus Riley.
What new projects are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on my third solo album. It is almost complete. I’m pleased about this album because I have quite a number of international collaborations on the album with Alaine, Peetah, Gramps Morgan and performing acts from Tanzania and Ghana.
Which Jamaican dancehall or reggae act would you like to collaborate with?
I am a big Damian Marley fan. His music inspires me.
With over 16 years in the music industry, do you have any words of advice for young musicians?
Have patience and stick to your principles in the industry.
What inspires your music?
My life. My everyday life, my family, the people around me and events that happen in my country. That inspires what I write.
What’s your favourite movie?
G I Joe.
What is your life philosophy?
When you give out love to the world, it comes back to you. That’s what I believe.
