Sagitaar tells his story
THE son of well-known guitarist Lascelles Beckford, singjay Sagitaar (Lascelles Beckford Junior) grew up around music.
But while he practised enough to become a competent guitarist, Sagitaar always wanted to make his mark as an artiste.
His latest song, Old Story Time, has given him much-needed exposure. It was produced by reggae singer Bobby Tenna on the Me Mumma rhythm.
“I’m very happy about the response the song has been receiving. People are talking about it all over the place,” said the Clarendon-born Sagitaar.
With Beckford senior’s reputation as a session musician, Sagitaar recalls doing the studio rounds with his father.
“I used to spend a lot of time around my dad, he use to take me to the studios with him all the time. So as I grew up I developed a great passion for the music,” he said.
After a relative played one of his songs for dancehall artiste Bugle, Sagitaar got his first break.
Bugle was so impressed by the song that he introduced Sagitaar to Craig and David Harrisingh of Daseca Records.
He has been working with that company since last year, recording songs such as One Draw and Child Molester.
“Working with Daseca has allowed me to learn a lot about songwriting, music production among other things. We have a very good musical and business understanding,” he said.
