Haitian Compas Festival marks 15 years in Miami
THE Haitian Compas Festival is marking its 15th anniversary in Miami.
Ten bands and four DJs are on Saturday’s line-up at Bayfront Park Amphitheatre in downtown Miami.
The annual festival draws thousands of Haitian music fans. Over the years, organisers Rodney Noel and Jean-Michel Cerenord have broadened the line-up to include music that doesn’t always fit the traditional definition of konpa.
This year’s festival will include konpa bands Carimi, Djakout (hash)1 and NuLook. A crowd favourite from Haiti’s carnival, Ambiance, will perform. So will Brothers Posse, which was banned from this year’s carnival by the Haitian government-sponsored carnival committee.
Saturday is also Haiti’s flag day. Noel tells The Miami Herald he expects to see a lot of fans wearing the red and blue colours of Haiti’s flag.
