Direct flight between Puerto Rico, Mexico begins
Officials in Puerto Rico say the US territory is welcoming direct flights from Mexico for the first time in 13 years.
Port Authority Director Victor Suarez says the first Puerto Rico-bound flight by Mexican-owned Interjet is scheduled to arrive Tuesday night. A second flight is scheduled for May 17.
Suarez said the promotional flights would soon operate on a more regular schedule.
There haven’t been direct flights between Puerto Rico and Mexico since 2000. Those flights were with Mexicana airlines which has since ceased operations.
The privately owned Mexican company Interjet was founded in 2005 and services 28 cities and towns in Mexico. Its A320 aircraft include in-seat videos that can allow passengers a cockpit view of takeoff and landing, as well as women-only bathrooms.
