Duanvale, Salt Marsh notch Trelawny FA titles
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — Duanvale FC and Salt Marsh were crowned Major League and Division One champions, respectively, in a dramatic day of football on Sunday as the Trelawny Football Association Monymusk leagues came to an end at the Elliston Wakeland Centre with the return leg finals.
Duanvale FC won the Major League title for the second time since the 2006-07 season after beating Spicy Hill 3-1 on penalty kicks, following Spicy Hill’s rally from a 0-2 first leg deficit by winning Sunday’s game 2-0 to force extra time and then the shoot-out.
Duanvale FC will now contest the Western Confederation Super League next season.
In the first game Salt Marsh United overturned a first-leg 0-2 deficit against All-Stars Sports and Youth Club to win 5-1 for a 5-3 aggregate win in the Division One decider.
In the Major League game, former national striker Fabian Dawkins masterminded a comeback, scoring in the 21st and earning a second half penalty that was converted by Damin Williams, as Spicy Hill pegged back a wasteful Duanvale.
Despite the better start and creating no fewer than six good scoring chances, Duanvale’s Oshane Brown missed a sitter in the first minute, while Orlando Grey and Kevon Bartley missed again in the second half.
Spicy Hill pulled one back in the 21st minute when Dawkins beat goalkeeper Devaughn Hawthorne from close range, and later in the second half, the striker was adjudged to have been fouled in the penalty box and Williams’ kick was partially saved by Hawthorne, but the ball had enough energy to cross the line.
Neither team scored in the extra time and while the first three kickers from Duanvale scored, just one of the first four kickers from Spicy Hill was on target.
Grey, Lansford Parkinson and Bartley scored, while Linnell Cowell, who came on just before the end of the second period of extra time, netted for Spicy Hill.
Brent Beckford hit the post with his kick, Terry Haughton’s kick was saved by Hawthorne, while Williams sent his kick high over the bar.
In the first game, Nish Sterling scored twice for Salt Spring, while Dewey Stewart, Knotshugh Davis and Tevin Belvett scored for Salt Marsh, and Jamari Galloway had All-Stars’ lone goal on the day.
