Santos blank H’View to regain Golden League crown
Bull’s eye!
Ian Burnett hit two goals and Wayne Brown struck another strike as Santos regained the 2013 Bull Investmentsponsored Golden League football title following their 3-0 drubbing of Harbour View at the NWC playing field, Mona, last Sunday.
Three teams — Santos, Harbour View and Kush — went into the final round of games with a chance of lifting the title, with long-time leaders Santos holding the advantage with a two-point lead over both Harbour View and Kush.
Santos led with 28 points, ahead of Harbour View and Kush on 26, while Kingston Commissioners were on 25 points in fourth place. While Harbour View faced the daunting task of toppling Santos to have any chance of winning the league, Kush had the easy passage of opposing Eastern, who had amassed only seven points from their 14 games going into their last game.
Kush did their job by defeating Eastern 2-0 with Mario Hackett and Lance Craig scoring, but Santos ensured that they won their second league title in three years by defeating their rivals with three second half strikes.
After a goalless first half, Santos come out firing in the second half after coach Kirk White went for a more attached formation. They took the lead five minutes after the resumption when Brown converted inside the far post from Burnett’s cross.
Harbour View pressed forward in search of an equaliser and Burnett made them pay when he scored on the counter attack in the 48th and 55th minutes.
In the other game played, defending champion Kingston Commissioners lost 1-2 to Wonders. Junior Stewart and Wayne Gentles scores for Wonders, while Clive Williams got the consolation for Kingston Commissioners, who had defeated Barbican FC 3-1 in the knockout final two Sundays ago.
At the presentation ceremony, which followed, Dane Peralto from Kingston Commissioners was voted the Most Valuable Player of the knockout competition. The league’s leading goal scorer was Barry Simpson of Christian Ambassadors with 21 goals, while Burnett was voted MVP.
Simone Gentiles, Director of Bull Investment Limited, was pleased with overall running of the competition and she thanked the players for the high level of football skills displayed during the season.
Fifteen teams played in the competition, which is confined to players 45 years and over.
