Portland volleyball serves off with exciting matches
The JaVA Portland Community Volleyball League served off on Sunday with two matches at the Gideon Educational Centre in Buff Bay, Portland.
In the first match, Seaview Setters went up against Hope Bay All-Stars and had little difficulty coming away 25-9, 25-11 winners.
In the feature match of the day, Belgium Blockers — who came into the League as favourites, having won the One Day Rally in April –outlasted a spirited Hope Bay Spikers 25-17, 20-25, 15-8.
Llewelyn Jackson, captain of the Blockers, commended the Spikers for making the match competitive but cited the all-round team effort as the basis for their victory.
Meanwhile, Spikers skipper Ubert Anderson identified mistakes made by his team at crucial points as the deciding factor.
The League continues on Sunday at the Hope Bay All-Age School, starting at 2:00 pm, with Blockers going up against Setters and Spikers facinng HB All-Stars.
