Flow with Rio Cobre

TODAY’S lively looking 10-race card at Caymanas Park will be without a designated feature race.

Nonetheless, the programme of 100 runners is so dynamic in its outline that patrons are likely to get more than what they may bargain for, as the quality of races offered will be more than enough to fill the breach.

The $786,500 scamper for Open Allowance three year olds and upward going 1,000 metres straight and featuring six potent runners that just fit the bill is the highlighter of the programme.

The penultimate event on the card, the Open Allowance event is scheduled to go to post at approximately 5:05 pm with first post at 12:45 pm.

The American-bred colt Blast Them Away, who got his wings clipped by the American-bred filly Noon It Is after returning to Open Allowance for the first time as a four-year-old on March 6, returned one month later to brush aside Noon It Is going over his favourite distance of 1,300 metres.

Again saddled with top weight of 57.0kg, Blast Them Away, trained by Wayne DaCosta for owner Robert K Thomas, will be attempting the straight course for the fist time. He has been scampering around the track in his preparation for this short sprint and should he run as well as he trained, the race should be very well contested, as all his rivals, except fellow American-bred El Poderoso, are sub-59.0-second performers, and El Poderoso is no mug on the straight course, having opened his winning account as a two-year-old going 600 metres straight in a time of 35.1 seconds.

El Poderoso, like his rivals, has gone through his paces like clockwork in preparation for the test speed, which they all possess and know how to execute.

In addition to Blast Them Away to be ridden by Dane Nelson, and El Poderoso, the mount of claiming apprentice Orlando Foster, is Lashing Force with Prince Holder up, Smokin Man, with Devon A Thomas in the saddle, Palace Gold, partnered by Paul Francis, and American-bred Rio Cobre with Leo Miller astride.

In addition to preparation, the two runners in the line-up who are expected to give Blast Them Away his most serious challenge could come from his stablemate Rio Cobre and Lashing Force, both possess tantalising form.

Rio Cobre stretched out for the first time and taking advantage of the lightweight went down by one half length in the King’s Plate to Typewriter going 1,500 metres after leading up to the final 100 metres .

Not one to lose form easily and with the reduction in distance it should hardly surprise to see the five-year-old dark bay, brown gelded son of Chelsey Cat out of Chelsey’s Finest (Crafty Friend) bred by Nancy C Shuford in the USA upstaging his more accomplished stablemate.

The DaCosta pair may look in real good trim to run away with the event, but the lightly-weighted Lashing Force must be given serious consideration. Like Rio Cobre, Lashing Force is in very good racing form and loves this straight sprint.

Both Smokin Man and Lashing Force are owned and trained by Raymond Townsend, who is one of the most successful conditioners for straight races and with Holder choosing Lashing Force over the Open Allowance campaigner Smokin Man, the danger lies somewhere in between.
