Ras Charmers looks for love in Jamaica
AFTER years of performing to fans of roots-reggae in Africa and Europe, singjay Ras Charmer is looking to make a name in Jamaica.
Ras Charmer (real name Curt Crutchley) lives in London but is in Jamaica promoting his latest single, Still Show Dem Love, produced by Danger Zone Records.
“I’m here doing some serious work in the studios. The vibe has been very good so far, the song is getting a lot airplay and the people love it,” the Rockfort-born entertainer said.
Ras Charmer, 35, has been recording since the late 1980s when he joined Togetherness Records. That label produced his debut album, No Mystery, which included songs such as Stars, Uprising, Togetherness and Woman Be Wise.
Though he performed at Sting in 2000, much of Ras Charmer’s career has been focused in Europe where he has performed on major festivals including Rototom in Italy and Spain.
For a time, he lived in Switzerland, recording his second album Rastafari Fulfillment there in 2004.
While he has not earned similar recognition in Jamaica, Ras Charmers is unfazed.
“It’s not as if the people in Jamaica don’t love my music but as the whole world can see, reggae music gets a wider acceptance outside of our homeland,” he says. “At home, dancehall has been a dominant force for a while, but I know in time I will get the love I deserve from my people.”
