Promoted Comfort holding own in Major League
COMFORT, Clarendon — Things have pretty much gone to form so far in this season’s Clarendon Captain’s Bakery Major League, with Sporting Central U-21s and Jamalco taking charge of the title race at the half-way stage.
However, it is newcomers Comfort, who have given the 12-team league table a refreshing look after 11 rounds of games.
While not exactly replicating the form of previous promoted teams to have won the last two league titles in their debut seasons, Comfort have been silently climbing the ladder. They currently occupy fifth position on 18 points, the same as fourth place Humble Lion, and are 11 points behind the leaders.
A key component in Comfort’s early season form is their combative, close-marking style of play. While it doesn’t always work, they rarely allow opponents time and space to settle into a rhythm.
Added to their rugged brand of football is also a tendency to stream forward in numbers, which seems to be paying off so far. Only second-placed Jamalco and leaders Sporting have better goalscoring records than the south-west Clarendon side.
Juxtapose Comfort’s current form with that of fellow promoted side Summerfield and you will get contrasting readings.
Summerfield, located just outside of the historic town of Chapelton in Clarendon’s north-central region, are hovering just above the relegation zone on 12 points.
They gained Major League promotion as champions of last season’s Division One and were expected to make a good impression, given the talented players in their squad. But except for the first two games, they are pretty much having a typical season for a promoted side.
Summerfield have won only three and drawn three of their 11 games played to date, with a shock 2-1 victory over title-chasing Jamalco in their final game of the first-round being their biggest scalp. And, if only for the short-term, it has kept them two points clear of the drop zone.
