Jamaican goal shoot continues to star
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (CMC) — Jamaica’s ace goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler remained in top form to lead Southern Steel to a comfortable 67-52 victory over Northern Mystics in the ANZ Championships in New Zealand on Monday.
Fowler, the leading scorer this season, thrilled a sold-out crowd by netting a breathtaking 53 goals from 54 attempts as Southern Steele registers their third victory.
Fowler leads the scoring chart with 250 goals from 270 attempts.
Her national teammate, Romelda Aiken, who represents Queensland Firebirds, is second with 227 goals, while another Jamaican, Carla Williams-Borrego, is in sixth place with 176 goals.
Williams-Borrego shot 25 goals to lead the Adelaide Thunderbirds to a nail-biting 54-53 victory over Aiken’s Queensland Firebirds on Sunday.
Aiken shot 46 goals from 49 tries for the Firebirds.
The victory moved the Thunderbirds to the top of the table with 10 points, two ahead of the Firebirds.
The 23-year-old Fowler, who represented Waulgrovians in the Jamaica leagues, had earlier set a new scoring record in the second round of the competition, when she netted 65 goals to lead the Steel to a comfortable 75-56 victory over Canterbury Tactix.
Fowler’s performance broke the previous single-game scoring record of 58 goals, which was jointly held by Borrego and Aiken.
