Drummond, Clare top table tennis championship
Phillip Drummond and Shenique Clare won the main titles in the Spring Open Table Tennis Tournament staged by the JTTA at the YMCA last Saturday, winning the men’s singles open and the women’s singles open, respectively.
It was the first tournament for the year, and also the first tournament to be staged by the new executive led by Godfrey Lothian.
In the final, Drummond crushed Dale Parham in straight sets, 11-8, 11-8, 11-8 (3-0). Drummond reached the final by stopping Laten McLish (11-3, 12-10, 7-11, 11-6 (3-1) in one semi-final, while Parham outlasted Warren Bailey (10-12, 9-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-4 (3-2) in the other, to advance to the final.
On the women’s side, Clare nipped Kaydian Carney 11-9, 4-11, 9-11, 11-7, 12-10 (3-2) in the final. Clare eased past Jodian Adams 11-6, 11-7, 11-8 (3-0) in one semi-final and Carney overpowered Tracy-Ann Dattadeen 11-6, 11-7, 11-7 (3-0) in the other, to advance.
The tournament produced one double champion in Dadrian Lewis, who won both the girls under-15 and the girls under-13 events, her opponent in both events being Brittany Murray.
