Dramatic three-way finish in golf tourney
THE first tournament in the Jamaica Golf Association’s 2013-2014 calendar came to an exciting close on Sunday at the Caymanas Golf & Country Club.
Over 60 golfers came out for the two-day event, which also served as a warm-up for the National Amateur Golf Championships that will be played in May.
Lindy Bartley, Sean Morris and Mark Newnham, tied for first place with a two-day score of 155. On the first hole of the play-off, Lindy Bartley dropped out of the competition. Morris and Newnham had matching drives on the second hole and in putting for eagle, Morris fell short on his forty-foot putt.
Newnham sank a six-foot putt and was declared the winner of the Catch the Manas Flight Tournament. Carl Bruce finished fourth with 156.
Tournament chairman Thomas Smith took first position in the 7-11 segment of the competition. Cedric Blair was first in the 12-16 group. Orville Marshall topped the 17-24 list of players.
Fred Sutherland copped the Super Seniors 0-8 title with 163, ahead of Opeton Marshall and Phillip Wilson, who both shot 164. Sherold Philibert took the title in the 9-17 category and Carlysle Hudson was first in the 17-24 batch.
Rochell Prince topped the ladies’ 0-8 competition on 163, Crystal Gayle ended the final day on 164 strokes in the 10-18 group and Diane Hudson won the 19-24 category trophy.
The junior segment of the tournament was well supported with the contenders playing some impressive golf. Xandre Roye, member of the Sandals Foundation team, was first in the Boys 17 & Under Tournament with 159. Jordan Lowe (168) won the title in the Boys 15 & Under, while Justin Burrowes earned first place with 157 in the Boys 13 & Under.
Montego Bay-based Sherisse Walker was first in the girls 17 & Under with 161. Kaitlin Robertson won the Girls 15 & Under with 181 strokes and Kei Harris finished on 166 to capture the Girls 13 & Under trophy.
Winston Dyke took the one-day title with 90.
