Wobbly Jamaica extend win streak
JAMAICA extended their historic and remarkable win-streak in Regional four-day cricket with a five-wicket defeat of the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) in a disappointingly low-scoring encounter at Sabina Park in Kingston yesterday.
The left-arm spinner Nikita Miller took six wickets to help dismiss the CCC for 152 in their second innings, which gave the hosts a meagre victory target of 65 on a pitch, that though offering bounce and turn for spin bowlers, was reasonably good for batting throughout the match.
The brittle Jamaican batting embarrassingly fumbled during the short run-chase, but eventually reached 65-5 in the post-lunch session to secure a sixth win — all inside three days — in as many matches this season.
Scores: CCC 150 (52.4 overs) & 152 (51.4 overs); Jamaica 238 (91.5 overs) & 66-5 (22.4 overs)
The five-time defending champions Jamaicans, who were already safely through to the May 2-5 semi-finals, finished top of the preliminary standings with 72 points, while the CCC finished second to last with 12 points.
The Windward Islands, Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago join Jamaica in the last four of the tournament.
The 31-year-old David Bernard, who stood in for rested Jamaica captain Tamar Lambert, said he was happy to prolong the streak, which stretches over three seasons, but lamented the shoddy batting display.
“It is always good to win and I’m happy to extend the win-streak to 15 matches. We played good cricket in patches, but when we were given that small total to chase we made a bit of a meal of it,” Bernard told reporters after the match.
The CCC captain Kyle Corbin, 22, said his side’s batting was the major letdown.
“We didn’t bat well in the first innings. In the second innings… we lost a few wickets this morning. We (our batsmen) have to make the bowlers work for their wickets,” Corbin said.
Earlier, the CCC resumed on their overnight 94-4, but added only two runs before Corbin, who made one, prodded forward to off-spinner Jamie Merchant and was brilliantly caught by short-leg fielder Zeniffe Fowler.
The persistently accurate Miller then accounted for 40-year-old left-hander Floyd Reifer (1), Akeem Dewar (0) and Dawayne Sealy (14) to end with 6-33 off 20 overs and four balls. The 30-year-old spinner’s total of eight wickets in the game gave him the man-of-the-match award and took him to 46 scalps in the tournament.
The debutant Merchant, who also dismissed the attacking wicketkeeper/batsman Chadwick Walton (30), and left-handed all-rounder Raymon Reifer (9), finished with 3-36 off 17 overs.
In reply, Jamaica lost Fowler (0), Brenton Parchment (22), Andre McCarthy (16), Blackwood (7) and Bernard (0) — all through injudicious stroke play.
The part-time off-spinner Nekoli Parris, who opened the bowling with seamer Dawayne Sealy, got rid of the rookie Fowler, whose miscued lofted shot was caught at mid-on by Akeem Dewar with the score on 17.
It was 26-2 when Parchment, who impressed briefly with two sweet pull shots and an ominous hook for six off Sealy, carelessly clipped a full delivery from Parris low into the hands of Kristopher Ramsaran at mid-on.
McCarthy was caught at short cover by Parris when he drove loosely to Dewar at 47-3.
The usually entertaining 21-year-old Blackwood was caught at mid-off attempting an agricultural swipe off a big-spinning delivery from Dewar only eight runs later.
Bernard belied his vast experience when he was caught by Dewar off a Parris delivery, in a very similar mode to Blackwood’s dismissal with the total 59-5 before Jamaica eventually skidded home.Scoreboard
