P’More tackle Valencia in crucial Champions League clash
Dethroned Jamaican Premier League champions Portmore United will tackle Haitian powerhouse Valencia FC in their Group Two CONCACAF Champions League Caribbean qualifying top-of-the-table clash at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex today at 6:00 pm.
In the other match scheduled for 8:00 pm between the bottom-placed teams, Jamaica’s Boys’ Town take on Puerto Rican outfit Bayamon FC.
On Friday, Valencia came from behind to beat Bayamon 3-1 and assumed leadership of the four-team group on goal difference, ahead of Portmore United, who edged Boys’ Town 1-0.
The impressive-looking Valencia, who only arrived in Jamaica a few hours before the match, were rocked by a ninth-minute goal from Carlos Martin, who headed Bayamon into the lead.
But once the Haitians settled, the result was never in doubt. Valencia quickly found the equaliser in the 20th minute via Augustin Walson from a free kick, and they went ahead in the 29th minute from a wonderful strike from Pompee Mardochee, following some slick passing.
Amy Andre sealed the win in 86th minute, firing home from just inside the box, as the Haitians showed that they will be a force to reckon with.
Meanwhile, Portmore United, who played second fiddle to the wasteful Boys’ Town for most of the game, sneaked a win courtesy of a Ricardo Morris strike in the 83rd minute.
Portmore’s coach Linval Dixon knows it will be a tough game against Valencia.
“Any team from Haiti will always be a good team. I think their development in football is really improving, but we will be ready for them. We know it will be a tough one,” said Dixon.
Valencia are a technically gifted and organised outfit and it will be interesting to see how Portmore United cope with the fast moving Haitians.
Meanwhile, in the second encounter, Boys’ Town and Bayamon enter their game knowing nothing than a win will be good enough.
The Puerto Ricans are big and strong and could use their height advantage against a Boys’ Town aggregation lacking in confidence.
Boys’ Town’s coach Andrew Price was again livid after his team proved wasteful in front of goal.
“We just have to continue work. It’s a three-match tournament, so we just have to get ourselves prepared for the next two games,” he pointed out.
“They are a good bunch, but once we go out there and play some football we should get the better of the Puerto Rican team,” he added.
The winner of the group will advance to the 2013/14 edition of the CONCACAF Champions League, while the runner-up enters into a two-legged playoff with the second-placed team from Group One, currently being played in Trinidad and Tobago.
