Burrell lavishes praise on St Thomas FA
The St Thomas FA has come in for praise for a well-run Major League season, which was highlighted by what has been described as an electrifying final at the York Oval in the parish on Wednesday night.
In the culmination of the season-long initiative of Wednesday Night Football, the competition came to a fitting end with an atmosphere “never before seen”, plus an estimated 5,000 cheering-mad spectators in attendance.
Apart from the vibes in the stands, both finalists put on a football show that was nothing short of magical, with Bath stopping Port Morant United 2-0.
Leading the congratulations was president of the JFF and CEO of the sponsoring company Captain’s Bakery and Grill, Captain Horace Burrell.
“The turnout was simply amazing. I must convey my heartiest congrats to president, (Wayne) Thompson, and his entire executive for a job well done.
“I have to confess that in my nearly two decades at the JFF, the atmosphere at the parish final was among the best I have witnessed in Jamaica,” said Burrell, who attended the game with other JFF executives.
Howard McIntosh, chairman of the JFF Technical and Development Committee and FIFA Development Officer, said: “It was a tremendous experience with spectacular crowd support.”
President of the St Catherine FA Peter Reid, whose parish had its version of night-time football, was beside himself with joy by what he experienced in St Thomas on Wednesday night.
“It was a wonderful and entertaining final… it is remarkable to see the turnout of the fans, especially on a weekday night and in a rural setting.
“The power of the beautiful game has been unleashed in your parish and it is hoped that this power can be (used) to achieve positive results, as we have done in St Catherine with the help of our sponsor LIME,” noted Reid, in a congratulatory message to the St Thomas FA.
President of the St Thomas FA and conceptualiser of Wednesday Football in the parish, Thompson, was overwhelmed by an amazing final and the resulting outpouring of appreciation.
“It’s the opinion of the executive that this season is the fruit of the seed planted at the start of the partnership with the Captain’s Bakery and Grill…and we are grateful for the support of the fans, the community, the police and JPS,” Thompson said.
Also attending the event were chairman of the JFF and CFU referees committees Peter Prendergast, and member of parliament for St Thomas West, James Robertson.
