A long way from Blueberry Hill
SINGJAY Beme Mystique says she has known what career path she would take since she was six years old, when a family friend visited her home in Montego Bay, St James.
“I remember one night my dad had his friend come over with his guitar, and I sang Blueberry Hill all night, because they kept asking me to ‘do it again’,” she recalled.
The 33-year-old, who lives in Atlanta, Georgia, has been recording for eight years. Her songs are certainly not as mellow as the Fats Domino classic.
“As a dancehall artiste/songwriter, I aim at captivating my listeners and audience with my powerful and lingering melodies which are sometimes raunchy. However, I do well on topics of utmost importance… issues that everyone can relate to,” she said.
Beme Mystique (real name Natalie Brown) attended Herbert Morrison Technical High School. While there, she hung with like-minded friends who expressed their musical energy by drumming on desks or banging on zinc fences in their community.
“I started taking music more seriously after I migrated to the USA. I started writing more, even though I was barely recording. After a while I developed my own style, so after raising and taking care of family, it was all music for me,” she said.
Since her first recording In 2005, Beme Mystique has released risqué songs like Gummy Gummy, Nookie Good and What If.
She says most of her live dates come in the Atlanta area.
