Ja seek to continue winning ways against CCC
FIVE-TIME defending champions Jamaica will seek to extend their 13-game winning streak in Regional four-day cricket when they welcome the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) to Sabina Park, in a rescheduled match slated to start today at 10:00 am.
Jamaica, who are already through to the semi-finals, lead the preliminary standings with 60 points, including five wins in as many matches. Their dominance is highlighted by the fact that all five games have ended inside three days.
The Combined Campuses and Colleges, who lost to the Windward Islands in the final of the Super50 tournament, have only 12 points and have no chance of making it to the semi-final.
When the teams clashed in the preliminary phase of the 50-overs competition in February, Jamaica won by four wickets in a low-scoring game on a Sabina Park pitch that proved tedious for attacking stroke play.
Jamaica’s left-arm spinner Nikita Miller, who is second on the wicket-taking list with 38 victims in five matches, told the Jamaica Observer that the team is looking to extend its run. He added that players who are out of form should use the game as a confidence booster.
“Yeah, we are definitely looking to extend (the winning streak). It is also an opportunity for players who are out of form to get some confidence heading into the semi-final,” he said yesterday.
Young middle-order batsman Jermaine Blackwood heads the Jamaican batting with 266 runs with a top score of 81. Outside of the exciting Blackwood, Jamaica’s batting has been below par.
Akeem Dewar, the Jamaican leg-spinner who has taken 18 wickets in four matches for the CCC this season, said his team will be competitive, despite the match holding little meaning on the outcome of their season.
He said reaching the final of the Super50 competition was a boost for the Combined Campuses outfit and added that he wants to do well against his compatriots.
“Players do have their goals and targets that they want to achieve for the season so this game is important and we want to finish the season on a high. We are in very high spirits, although we are disappointed by the loss (in the Super50 final). Still, it was a very good experience for us reaching the final.
“There are a few new players in the squad so they are anxious to play well in that match. I want to do well against every team I play against… it will be a bonus to do well against Jamaica.”
Fellow Jamaican Chadwick Walton has scored 378 runs in five matches including a century and two half centuries. He leads the CCC run charts this season.
Jamaica will host Trinidad & Tobago in one semi-final next week, while in the other encounter, the Windward Islands entertain Barbados.
