Scoop Jordyne gets the vote for Joshua Morrison Mem
ESCOGIDO’S lightly raced but improving Scoop Jordyne go in search of a quick double in the $480,000 Joshua Morrison Memorial Cup highlighter at Caymanas Park today.
Set among Restricted Allowance V native-bred four-year-olds and upward (NW2), the Joshua Morrison has attracted 10 starters and is scheduled to go to post at approximately 4:55 pm with first post at 1:15 pm.
The compact field of evenly matched runners makes for a very competitive contest going 1,500 metres with the majority ideally suited to the distance that could make the outcome very unpredictable and therefore close at the wire.
To add to that ability to get the distance, a number of the starters are at present enjoying pleasant and encouraging form that sets the stage for a testing call.
As far as winning form and that appearance of having the ability to escape the grade after two career runs, the Leroy Biggs-trained Scoop Jordyne fits the bill snuggly.
A fairly well-bred bay colt by Burning Marque out of the 2002 Jamaica 1,000 Guineas winner, One One Nine, (The Medic) and bred David Eccleston, Scoop Jordyne won impressively on his second attempt.
Starting his racing career against horses he should easily beat going 1,500 metres, but was poorly apprentice ridden, trainer Biggs called upon the services of the four-time champion jockey Omar Walker to get the job done. Scoop Jordyne turned the form around in no uncertain manner and looked a completely different animal, winning by all of nine lengths when fitted with the blinkers going 1,200 metres.
Like his other rivals, Scoop Jordyne is ideally suited to 1,600 metres and showing great scope for further improvement could leave (NW2) behind forthwith, having pleased in his preparation with the leading jockey remaining in the irons.
However, this field is by some measure a more experienced one than he has faced on his previous encounters, with the presence of Above The Radar, Pegasus, Little Fire, He’sthereal Links, Western Bull, and Good Over Evil all of whom have themselves look ready to move on.
What is instructive in this race is that the three top jockeys plying their trade at the Park are involved in this trophy race, having secure favourable rides.
Shane Ellis will ride He’sthereal Links for trainer Cashbert Khwalsingh.
Bred and owned by Ian Lodge, the dark bay gelding by He’stherealthing out of Exotic links (Category) could be considered a major disappointment in his inability to win races. Be that as it may, he runs well for Ellis and must be considered to have an equally good chance of being around when this is being decided.
Another who must be given a more than favourable chance to have a serious say is Above the Radar.
A chestnut gelding trained by Gary Griffiths for owner Keith Williams, Above The Radar, who truly loves the trip, will be mounting a serious challenge after turning for home and should the claiming apprentice Ruja Lahoe not leave his charge for too late then he will be among those finishing best in the drive for the wire.
So too will be Pegasus, ridden by Dane Nelson, and Little Fire, the mount of apprentice champion Shameree Muir.
