Manchester hold upperhand in Spalding Cup
Manchester High’s march toward the ISSA/Grace all-island three-day Spalding Cup title was halted by the inclement weather on day two after destroying Wolmer’s Boys for a paltry 92 and amassed a massive 296 lead by tea when rain interrupted.
A five-wicket haul of 5-19 from 10 overs by Raghia Francis has put Manchester on the cusp of victory after they secured a first inning lead of 138 runs.
Scores in the game: Manchester High 230 and 158-4; Wolmers 92.
Francis was ably supported by Nicholas Walters 2-14 from six overs, while Suwayne Morrisson top-scored for Wolmer’s with 24.
In their second innings, Manchester went in chase on quick runs and rattled up 158-4 with Powell who made 89 in the first innings, followed up with 36. Oshane Walters so far top-scored with 42 as Manchester tightened their grip on the match.
Wolmer’s, the urban champions, had reumed their innings struggling at 29-3 in reply to Manchester’s solid first innings total of 230 and never got going and were dismissed for an inadequate total of 92 and trailed by 138 on first innings.
In Manchester’s first innings, Powell was supported by Romario Levy, who chipped in with 29 against Deneil Griffiths, who took 4-49 off 34 overs, and Delbert Gayle, who grabbed 4-55 off 38.
If the inclement weather forces the abandonment on the third and final day, Manchester High will be crowned all-island schoolboy cricket champion.
