JAMAICA’S cricket head coach Junior Bennett said his team disappointed in most facets of the game during their five-wicket semi-final loss to eventual regional Super50 champions Windward Islands at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Friday.

Opener Brenton Parchment cracked 86 and Nkrumah Bonner hit a patient 74 to lift Jamaica to 242-8 in 50 overs, but the Windwards eased to the target with six balls to spare.

Bennett argued that given the second wicket stand of 166 runs between Parchment and Bonner, and with over 13 overs remaining when the latter fell at 169-2, the Jamaicans should have set the Windward Islands a bigger total to chase.

“Unfortunately, I think we were let down in almost all the departments. Bonner and Brenton Parchment set up the game for us at a 169-1 with about 15 overs to go. We definitely should have scored somewhere about 270 to 280. There is no question about it because a (rate of a) run-a-ball from there would get you to that kind of total,” he told the Jamaica Observer upon the team’s return yesterday.

“It was poor application from the batsmen. With that start there was no need for people to be dismissed (caught) on the boundaries trying to execute those big shots. We lost a lot of wickets in the competition during the Powerplay Overs and it was something we discussed for this match, so it shouldn’t have happened,” Bennett added.

The Tamar Lambert-led Jamaicans, who won the previous Super50 tournament in 2011, were also guilty of bowling inconsistent lines and of flooring a few catching opportunities.

Bennett highlighted those areas as well.

“Then I don’t believe we bowled well. We bowled on both sides of the pitch and the fielding was definitely not up to standard,” he lamented.

He did, however, praise young batman Andre McCarthy for doing “fairly well” in his first full season of regional 50-over cricket.

McCarthy scored a total of 206 runs in seven matches, including two half-centuries and was second on the list of Jamaican run scorers.

Bonner was the top Jamaican run scorer with an aggregate of 264 runs, including a century and a half-ton.

Leg-spinner Odean Brown, who took 2-38 in the match, shared the opinion of Bennett that the batting unit fell short by approximately 40 runs.

“I think we were like 40 runs short because we got the platform from Brenton and Bonner. It has been going on from season…we would love for the batsmen to step up and play their part in a more efficient way,” he said.

Brown took 10 wickets in five matches, while his spin bowling partner Nikita Miller led the Jamaicans with 13 victims in seven outings.

The Jamaicans now turn their attention to the rescheduled preliminary round game of the four-day tournament against the Combined Campuses and Colleges at Sabina Park, starting Thursday.

Jamaica, the five-time reigning four-day champions, are already into the semi-final of that competition.

Bennett said his team will have to refocus and bounce back from the Super50 disappointment.

“We have to put the one-day tournament behind us and now we focus on the four-day,” he said.
