Sir Viv joins Daredevils as advisor
NEW DELHI, India (IANS/CMC) — Legendary West Indies batsman Sir Vivian Richards has joined Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Daredevils in an ambassadorial and advisory role for the rest of the season.
The 61-year-old, the most outstanding batsman of the 1970s and ’80s era, met with the team for the first time Friday.
“I am looking forward to working with the Delhi Daredevils this season,” he said.
“I know the team has many players of proven quality and others who have immense talent and hunger to succeed at this level and higher. It will be a great experience for me to be their sounding board and inspire them to deliver quality performances.”
Delhi Daredevils team mentor TA Sekar, a former Test pacer, said the presence of the former West Indies captain in the squad would inspire the team, which is yet to win a game.
“There are a number of youngsters in the squad who can make the most of the opportunity to interact with Sir Viv and evolve as cricketers,” Sekar said.
“He was keen to be with the team at the start of the season, but he had prior commitments and could join us only now.”
Sir Viv played 121 Tests and scored 8,540 runs at an average of 50. He also led West Indies in 50 Tests and never lost a series.
West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell is currently on the Delhi roster.
