Beckford double keeps Terriers out of trouble
LONDON, England (CMC) — Newly minted Reggae Boy Jermaine Beckford netted a double to fire Huddersfield Town to a 3-0 victory over Millwall on Saturday, and power them three points clear of the dreaded drop zone in the Championship division.
The 29-year-old striker, on loan from Leicester City, struck on either side of half-time at John Smith’s Stadium to make it four goals in a week, after he also hit a brace against Wolves the previous Saturday.
He now has eight goals for the season.
In what was his 200th league start, Beckford opened the scoring eight minutes before half-time when he capitalised on slack marking to curl in a volley from 12 yards.
James Vaughan doubled the lead in the 55th minute before setting up Beckford’s second seven minutes later, providing a superb pass for the former Leeds hitman to bury high into the nets.
At MEMS Priestfield Stadium in the south east, former Jamaica international Deon Burton scored his 13th goal of the season to help Gillingham to a 2-2 draw with Wimbledon, and lift the League Two title.
Burton opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Danny Kedwell added another to give Gillingham a 2-0 lead at the break.
However, Jack Midson (62nd) and Jonathan Meades (82nd) earned Wimbledon a share of the points.
The title was Gillingham’s first in 49 years.
