Harbour View on cusp of premier league title
IT’S a simple equation for Harbour View. Beat Boys’ Town today and be crowned Red Stripe Premier League champions for the 2012/13 season. It’s as simple as that.
The ‘Stars of the East’ are on the verge of securing their fourth premier league title in 13 years, if they can beat perennial nemesis, the ‘Red Brigade’ at Collie Smith Drive starting at 3:30 pm.
Following their 2-1 win over Arnett Gardens on Thursday, their first win in seven games, Harbour View are on the brink of victory.
Their destiny is in their hands and they don’t have to depend of anyone.
Harbour View are on 66 points, seven clear of second-placed Waterhouse, and contrary to popular belief, the pressure is not on Harbour View, but instead on Waterhouse to win all of their three remaining matches.
Waterhouse will play Tivoli Gardens on Monday and by then, that game might be of academic interest only, as the league could very well be over by then.
Harbour View’s Jermie Lynch seems to be in fine form, netting two goals against Arnett Gardens, and also scored a header against Tivoli Gardens last Monday.
With the creative Jermaine Hue pulling the strings, along with the vastly improved and calming Evan Taylor — arguably the signing of the season — Joel Senior, Richard Edwards, Andre Fagan, John Ross Edwards, Christopher Harvey, Montrose Phinn and goalkeeper Michaud Barrett available for selection against Boys’ Town, Harbour View look a safe bet to win.
But their long-time rivals would hate to see them celebrate on their home ground and will be going all-out to spoil the party.
But with the Caribbean Champions Cup now occupying their minds, as well as being out of the title race, Boys’ Town might be a bit distracted and only time will tell which team turns up.
Meanwhile, 11th-placed Highgate United, on 35 points, could be relegated today if they lose to Sporting Central FC at Brancourt, and 10th-placed Humble Lion, with 40 points, beat Montego Bay United at Catherine Hall.
St Mary outfit, Highgate, who play their games in Drax Hall in St Ann, are five points below Humble Lion, and a further eight adrift of Sporting Central, and they will need a miracle to survive the drop.
If they can pull off a victory over Sporting, that would drag the Clarendon team in the relegation picture, and if Humble Lion lose to Montego Bay, then it could come down to three teams separated by five points battling for survival.
Following today’s encounter, Highgate will have the already relegated Savannah and Cavalier to play, Humble Lion will have to travel to Sporting Central and close out their campaign against Savannah, while Sporting will close against Montego Bay United.
In the other dead rubbers, fifth-placed Arnett Gardens, on 52 points, host Portmore United, on 54 points, in third spot, and eighth-placed Cavalier, with 48 points, travel to relegated Savannah SC, on 22 points.
