Beego Blood reports for duty
Since the death of deejay Captain Barkey last year, his younger brother, Sean ‘Beego Blood’ Ellis has stepped up his own career while keeping his brother’s legacy alive.
On the home front, he cares for their elderly mother, Irene Clarke, ensuring she receives regular medical attention.
“It has been tough without Barkey, my brother is gone, so I have to be the one taking care of the family. I have my own family but I jump over to the old lady more time and mek sure shi alright. Jah never give you more than you can bear, and my mother is strong, one of the strongest persons that I know, it surprise mi how shi handle the situation. Shi take the whole thing well,” Beego Blood said.
Beego Blood is also a deejay and says he has been getting airplay with his latest singles, Cold Concrete, Girls Wanna Have Fun and Give Praises. The latter is a combination with his late brother for the Rebel Soulz label.
“Everything is going great, Cold Concrete ah gimme the biggest buzz so far, with selectors in Kenya sending requests for dub plates. I am just going to continue to write songs and prepare for the great things to come,” he said.
Beego has performed on shows such as the Bob Marley Birthday Celebration in Trench Town, Summer Sizzle, West Best Fest, Champions in Action, Trinidad’s Rhythm Fest 2005 and appeared at Sting several times.
Earlier this year, he performed at the Follow Di Arrow show, doing a tribute to Barkey with his sibling’s longtime sidekick, Wickerman.
“It was a very emotional thing for me to do but mi know mi mek Barkey proud a mi,” he said.
Beego grew up in Portsmouth, Portmore. After leaving school, he wrote songs for a number of artistes and even entered the popular Magnum Kings and Queens contest. He got his break in 2007 when he joined the Rebel Soulz organisation and has since built a repertoire of original songs. One of those songs, Watching You, was part of the soundtrack for the movie Bashment.
