The heat is on! Waterhouse close gap to 4 points
LEADING goalscorer Jermaine Anderson crafted a goal to give Waterhouse a hard-fought 1-0 win against Boys’ Town in their fourth-round Red Stripe Premier League game at Collie Smith Drive yesterday.
The win helped Waterhouse to keep the pressure on leaders Harbour View, improving the Drewsland team to 59 points, four adrift of the leaders, who host Arnett Gardens at 7:00 pm today, in one of two games on. In the other game, Tivoli Gardens visit Ferdie Neita Park to take on Portmore United also at 7:00 pm.
At Collie Smith Drive, Boys’ Town appeared luckless as they played with greater purpose than their visitors, but failed to do what Waterhouse did. That is to score.
The Drewsland-based Waterhouse drew a free kick some 25 yards from goal. Anderson stepped in and outfoxed goalkeeper Kirk Porter with a well-constructed right-footed strike that temporarily knocked the wind out of the Boys’ Town’s sail.
The goal came a minute from the break, which apparently gave the hosts time to reflect and approach the second session more determined to get back into the match, as they, too, were eyeing a serious Championship challenge, as victory would have catapulted them ahead of Waterhouse into second place on 57 points.
But it was not to be, in spite of a 10-minute barraging of the Waterhouse goal area. The visitors rose to the occasion as they defended stubbornly to protect their lead and Boys’ Town never recovered from the only major slip in the game.
It was a bittersweet moment for Boys’ Town’s coach Andrew Price: “It is always painful to lose a game like this that you dominate. We did that for the entire game where it was literally one way traffic. But to win matches you have to be clinical in front of the goal and we got some chances in the first half that we should have put away. This, nonetheless, is good preparation for the Caribbean Cup. I like the chemistry of the team, they moved the ball around a lot, maintained a lot of possession and would just have to continue to improve on our finishing.”
His counterpart Junior Francis was in better spirits: “This is a good result for team morale, as you would know by now that Boys’ Town is a very hard team to beat at home. It was a hard and physical game, but my team withstood the challenge and came away victorious.”
