William Knibb, Spot Valley on course for basketball finals
HOLLAND, Trelawny — Defending champions William Knibb Memorial and Spot Valley could schedule a repeat of last year’s final of the ISSA Western High school girls’ basketball competition with wins against Muschett High and Holland, respectively, in return-round games at Holland High today.
Following comfortable wins over Montego Bay schools Mt Alvernia High and Montego Bay High, respectively, on Monday, wins today would take the teams clear of the rest of the six-team field and land them in the finals set for next week.
Spot Valley, who lead with 15 points after rebounding from their upset loss to Mt Alvernia High last week, will face Holland High in the second game of the double header at Holland High, after William Knibb, on 13 points, take on former champions Muschett High in the opening game set for 2:30 pm.
Mt Alvernia are in third place on 13 points, but have lost five games to Spot Valley High’s one, followed by Muschett, on 12 points, Montego Bay High, on 10, and Holland High, on nine points.
Both William Knibb and Spot Valley had scored comfortable wins in their first-round games and are expected to repeat today. William Knibb had beaten Muschett High 62-21, while Spot Valley had won 55-46 over Holland.
On Monday, William Knibb rolled to their sixth straight win, brushing past Mt Alvernia High 53-37, as the Montego Bay school managed just 13 points in the first three quarters.
Three players led by Khaydeen Thompson with 19 points, Andrea Campbell with 17 points, and Shanique Binns scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, William Knibb led 10-8, 29-9 and 37-13 at the intervals.
Tara-Gay Heaven had another solid performance for the newcomers with 16 points, 17 rebounds, four blocked shots, seven steals, and three assists, while Sherry-Kay Purrier scored eight points and had four steals.
Spot Valley also had it easy against Montego Bay High, winning 60-33, as Loretta Gordon scored 36 points and Nicola Hewitt scored 8, while Olivia Beckford led Montego Bay High with 24 points.
