Trio unbeaten in Super League netball
DEFENDING champions Jamalco, along with University of the West Indies (UWI) Pelicans ‘A’ and Tivoli ‘A’ remained unbeaten in the 2013 Berger Paints/Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) Super League competition after scoring wins at the Leila Robinson Courts last Saturday.
The Winston Nevers-coached, Clarendon-based Jamalco aggregation had to work hard to stave off a late fourth-quarter charge from Mico ‘A’ before clinching a narrow 38-36 win. Jamalco also had to come from a 7-9 first-quarter deficit, before registering other quarterly scores of 21-16, 32-23 and 38-36. It was Jamalco’s fourth win from four matches.
For the defending champions, goal-shooter Elaine Davis scored 23 goals from 29 attempts, Shanieka Watson had six from eight, and Naudia Brown, eight from 15 efforts, while for Mico ‘A’, Keresa Kessna scored 22 goals from 37 attempts.
Meanwhile, the Conrad Parkes-coached UWI Pelicans ‘A’ registered their fifth consecutive win from as many starts by defeating GC Foster Strikers ‘A’ 46-32 after coming from a first-quarter 10-11 deficit.
Pelicans ‘A’ were in for a tough third quarter after taking a 23-19 lead at half-time, only to see their opponents rallying nicely in the third quarter where the scores were tied at 28-28. The strong approach in the last quarter saw Pelicans ‘A’ pulling away to a comfortable 46-32 victory.
LaDonna Lamonth netted 30 goals from 39 attempts, and teammate Thristina Harwood had 16 goals from 27 efforts, while for GC Foster Strikers ‘A’, shooters Shantal Slater scored 22 goals from 29 efforts, and Petal Smith had 10 goals from 18 tries.
The Sylvester Campbell-coached Tivoli ‘A’ also recorded their fourth straight win from as many games by defeating the Winston Nevers-coached Cable Pro 47-31, leading in all four quarters 9-6, 22-11, 33-22, and 47-31.
Jamaica’s national senior team goal-shooter Sabrina Spence was in fine form, as she netted 42 goals from 47 attempts, while her teammate Jodi Ann Ffrench-Kentish scored five from 10 efforts. For Cable Pro Deneen Taylor scored 24 goals from 40 attempts.
The Marvette Anderson-coached Waulgrovians ‘A’ chalked up their first win after four starts with a 37-29 result over first-timers, the Dalton Hinds-coached Global United ‘A’.
Waulgrovians ‘A’ held a close first-quarter 10-8 lead with the losers staying in touch 19-17 at the half-time break. Global ‘A’ rallied well in the third quarter to enter the final break with the scores locked at 25-25. However, the more experienced approach of Waulgrovians ‘A’ in the fourth and final quarter applied more pressure on their opponents to come out with a comfortable 37-29 goal win.
Shooter Khadijah Williams netted 30 goals from 38 attempts for Waulgrovians ‘A’ with Nordia Hanson hitting seven from 16 tries, while Meleisha Josephs scored 16 goals from 23 attempts, and Claudia Callender with 11 goals from 20 efforts for Global United ‘A’.
