Mt Alvernia score victory in schoolgirl basketball
WAKEFIELD, Trelawny — Newcomers Mt Alvernia High scored their biggest victory in the ISSA Western Conference high schools girls’ basketball competition after snapping Spot Valley high’s unbeaten run on Friday, defeating them 48-37 at Muschett High to avenge a first round 47-38 loss.
Tara-Gay Heaven scored a game-high 34 points as she led the Montego Bay school to their fourth win, while Holland High also scored their first win of the season, knocking off Muschett 37-33 in a close game with Lanasha Smith scoring all the points for her team.
Mt Alvernia took charge of the game early and led 13-9 after the first quarter before going into the half-time break up 27-23, then increased their lead to seven points at the end of the third quarter, where they led 36-29.
Heaven also grabbed 12 rebounds and had four steals and five assists in their memorable victory as Lesean Pommell assisted with eight points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots, as well as three steals and three assists.
Loretta Gordon scored 29 points and had eight rebounds, four steals and two assists for Spot Valley, who still lead the points race with 13, one more than Mt Alvernia High and Muschett who are tied on 12 each, followed by defending champions William Knibb on 11 with Holland High and Montego Bay High both on nine points each.
Holland High had lost all previous seven games, started slowly as they trailed Muschett 3-6 after the first quarter, but rallied in the second to lead 17-8 and were ahead 23-21 going into the fourth quarter.
Smith also had two rebounds for Holland High, while Sashaneil Smalling and Tisha Harris both scored nine points to lead Muschett.
