Bicknell brothers triumph at the ITF Costa Rica Bowl
JAMAICANS Jacob and Blaise Bicknell scored another double success for Jamaica’s juvenile tennis competing at the ITF Costa Rica Bowl on Friday.
Competing in a Level 3 Cotecc/ITF 14U tournament, Jacob won the singles event by defeating Diego Chavarria of Costa Rica 6-4, 6-2 in the final.
Playing with great panache, Jacob, 13, then partnered with little brother Blaise, 11, to capture the doubles event by beating Daniel Dominguez (Guatemala) and Brandon Perez (Venezuela) in the final 6-2, 6-4 to give Jamaica the double success.
Jacob, who was very pleased with his performance throughout the tournament, said: “I was so nervous, to start with, and was down 0-3, and then once I slowed my game and warmed up then I started to play much better. I then kept that momentum until I eventually won.”
Jacob also said he was very happy with his overall performance throughout the large draw of 27 top-ranked 14U International Tennis Federation players. He also expressed extreme delight in defeating Chavarria, as the Costa Rican had beaten his brother the day before in the semi-finals in a tough three-setter, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Blaise reported that he and his brother thought it was the best doubles that they have played together. He also said that he was very proud of his performance in the singles, as well as being the youngest player in the tournament. Blaise and Jacob also said that they would like to give a special thanks to their coach Mel Spence, who accompanied them for the week in Costa Rica and without whose help they could not have done as well.
