Strategic plan unveiled at golf AGM
THE membership of the Jamaica Golf Association experienced few changes to the committee at the recently concluded annual general meeting held at the Constant Spring Golf Club.
The honorary secretary William Brown and vice-president Peter Chin were returned unopposed. No ladies representative was nominated and only one new member added to the executive committee. Montego Bay-based Sean Morris will bring enthusiasm along with new blood to the executive body.
In his report, president Wayne Chai Chong outlined a strategic plan entitled Vision 2020, which included the need for greater and easier access to golf facilities and coaching; a major focus of bringing new players to the sport and building a foundation through junior golf and the objective of qualifying for the Olympics and thus garnering greater recognition for Jamaica as a golf destination.
A technical team has been established and charged with developing a corps of elite players. The team, headed by Brian Roper, includes Jason Lopez, who has primary responsibility for junior golf coaching, Ewan Peebles, the director of golf at Tryall; and Spencer Edwards, Half Moon’s director of golf. It is expected that the work of the committee will result in steady improvement of the national team performances.
The recently appointed squad is in high gear with National Trials on the horizon.
