DB Basovak, Albion rule St Catherine football
Dennis Brooks (DB) Basovak and Albion FC walked away with the LIME St Catherine Major and Division One Leagues with contrasting victories over Christian Pen and New Raiders, respectively, at the Spanish Town Prison Oval on Friday.
DB Basovak battled to a 1-1 draw in normal time before defeating Christian Pen 6-5 on penalties for the Major League crown, while Albion blanked New Raiders 2-0 to lift the Division One title.
DB Basovak, who played premier league football in 1995, will get $300,000 and a spot in the South Central Confederation Super League.
With the game apparently heading to a tame draw, Marvin Jones gave Christian Pen an 86th minute lead, nodding home from a corner kick against the run of play. But Marshall Marsh found the equalising goal in the 89th minute for DB Basovak from close range, sending the game into extra time.
With the game being aired live by TVJ, television time was against them, hence, the officials played 15 minutes of extra time before the dreaded penalty kicks.
The Homestead-based Basovak in Spanish Town were perfect from the spot, scoring all six kicks through Vinroy Hayles, Teja Thomas, Andre Simmonds, Marshall Marsh, Ronardo Graham and Travis Scott.
In a shoot-out in which both goalkeepers failed to even dive at an attempt, Devon Wilson, Marvin Jones, Nicholas Forbes, Kerome Richards and Creig Morrison netted for the losers.
Former Boys’ Town player Mark Newsome was the only person to miss for Christian Pen, rattling the crossbar and as the ball rebounded into play, the blue and white-clad Homestead supporters went delirious, as they ran in all direction to celebrate a long overdue victory.
Basovak had being in the semi-final four of the last six years and head coach Michael Johnson, who more than likely won’t be around next season, having taken the interim position after the season began, said words couldn’t describe how he felt.
“My task was really to help them through the season and my job is pretty much done. It’s a good feeling. They have worked hard and they have dedicated themselves,” said Johnson, a former teacher at St Catherine High School.
In the curtain raiser, Albion lived up to their favourites billing with a workmanlike win over a spirited New Raiders.
Kenny Lee netted both goals in the 71st and 90th minutes, as Albion captured the Division One trophy, $200,000 and a spot in next season’s Major League.
Head coach Daine Brown was ecstatic after a hard season culminated in promotion.
“I am very elated. This was the task from the outset…winning the Division One and going back to the Major League and going back to the Major League, and now we have done that,” Brown told the Jamaica Observer.
“It was a hard-fought game, but the guys have been working so hard. This is for the community, they have been behind us all season,” he added.
Lee, who scored both goals, said he trained real hard for this. “We played against this team before, but I was at work so today they don’t know nothing about me, so I just showed them what I can do.”
New Raider will collect $100,000 for their losing effort, having lost 1-3 to Albion in a earlier match-up.
