All at stake – Four hunt St Catherine football titles today
THE LIME-sponsored St Catherine football competitions climax today with the final of the Major and Division One Leagues which will be aired lived on TVJ for the second year running.
Albion FC will tackle New Raiders for the Division One title at the Spanish Town Prison Oval starting at 1:00 pm before Christian Pen take on DB Basovak at 4:00 pm for the coveted Major League crown.
All four teams are all oozing confidence and fans can expect two exciting matches. Coach of Major League favourites, Christian Pen, Lenworth Reckford, in particular has upped tempo and has promised fans Brazilian-style football.
“It’s going to be end to end stuff. We have the quality players to match up against Basovak. They are a team of a lot of youngsters… a hard-running team, but the technical aspect of it lies within us,” noted Reckford.
“We will be putting the ball around and bouncing it around and we will be playing some Brazilian football… at the end of the afternoon and when the game is finished, Christian Pen will be out on top,” said a confident Reckford.
Those players Reckford is talking about are former Boys’ Town player Mark Newsome, Devon Wilson, leading goalscorer Marvin Jones, Creig Morrison (formerly of Portmore United) and Nicholas Forbes, the brother of Kenardo Forbes of Waterhouse fame, to name a few.
But DB Basovak coach Michael Johnson is just as confident of lifting the trophy and making the community of Homestead vey proud of their home-grown players.
“We are more than happy to be in the final for the community as all the players are from the community and that itself is good,” Johnson pointed out.
“We have worked hard and are prepared and what we can control, we will control. We will play how we want to play and we hope that will be good enough to win,” he said.
DB Basovak will be looking toward Andre ‘Messi’ Simmonds, Vinroy Hayles, Luke Soares, Zavian McGaw and Renardo Graham for victory.
Meanwhile, in the curtain-raiser, Albion and New Raiders are set for an epic showdown also in which Albion will start favourites for the title.
With a 3-1 win on their only meeting this season in a cross-zone match, Albion coach Daine Brown has put that behind him and will start fresh come today.
“We can’t look at that again. It’s a reason why they are in the final. They have grown since, but we are upbeat, confident but the ball is round,” said Brown. Albion will be looking towards the league’s top-scorer in Tavoy Morgan to again lead from in front along with Orville Newell, Sheldon McKay, David Morris, David Samuels, and Michael Prehaye for victory.
New Raiders won’t be easy pushovers, and with the likes of Kevaughn Russell, Ricardo Wright and Kevin Monroe, could be dangerous.
