‘Villa’ extend perfect record in St James D-1
BICKERSTETH, St James — Mountain Villa extended their perfect start to the St James Football Association Dennis Barton/Weston King Division One season after ending Marl Road’s perfect start with a 2-1 win at Bickersteth Oval on Thursday.
Lesmore McCurdy’s 88th-minute goal broke the deadlock between the teams as Mountain Villa climbed to the top of the tables in Zone A with nine points from three straight wins as Marl Road dropped into a three-way tie for second place on six points.
In Zone B, Salt Spring Roses took over the lead with seven points after beating Juniors FC 1-0 at the UDC field, while Irwin High also had a 1-0 win over Abes FC who were suffering their third straight loss.
At Bickersteth, Edmond Sherrif gave Mountain Villa the lead after just five minutes but Wayon Pinnock equalised for Marl Road with his fourth goal of the season in the 49th minute.
McCurdy then got the winner with two minutes to go, in the 88th minute to preserve his team’s perfect record.
Salt Spring’s winner also came late in their game with Morehaul Ellis scoring in the 86th minute as they earned their second win to jump two places into first position ahead of Lilliput Rovers (five points) and Copperwood FC (four).
In the other game on Thursday, Fabian Bennett’s 15th-minute goal was enough to give Irwin three points in their game against Abes for their second win in three starts.
