Waterhouse humbled at Drewsland
THE power of sway Geoffrey Maxwell holds over Waterhouse when coaching against them, resurfaced at Drewsland on Sunday when his Humble Lion scored a numbing 1-0 win in their Red Stripe Premier League game.
The goal came as a result of goalkeeper Richard McCallum fumbling the ball close to his goal line and after his defenders failed to clear it out of harms way, Denzil Watson, who less than a minute earlier came off the bench as a second-half substitute, found the winning goal from close up.
The Lions of Clarendon were defeating Waterhouse for the second time this season with Maxwell in charge, and the defeat could not come at a worst time, as it stymies Waterhouse, on 53 points, nine adrift of leaders Harbour View, who are on 62.
In losing their second consecutive match by a similar margin, Waterhouse have seriously damaged any slim prospect they may entertain in lifting the 2012/2013 Red Stripe Premier League Championship.
Despite losing twice, league leaders Harbour View have also not distinguished themselves by drawing and losing. Waterhouse still have a very slim chance, but it is a win-win situation from here in with a mere five matches remaining in the League.
With four of the main players from Waterhouse missing in Rohan Amos, Hugh Howell, Jason Watson, and skipper Andre Clennon, Maxwell took advantage of the weakened hosts by holding the forwards at bay, while pressing the defence. And this, according to Maxwell, paid off.
He added: “We played in spurts, but we did what we had to do and came away winners. When you look at the overall performance coming to Waterhouse it is not easy to play here and to win. So I thought we did very well.”
Maxwell’s counterpart, Junior Francis, showed obvious disappointment with the loss: “We will bounce back. Looking at the game we missed so many chances and did not put them away… you can just write this down to bad luck today. And to add fuel to fire there was a mix-up in front of the goal and a goal was scored against us. This is not, however, the end of the line. Better days are ahead,” Francis said.
