Sun still shines for netballers in wake of sweep
JAMAICA netball coach Oberon Pitterson-Nattie has highlighted a number of positives which came out of the national team’s 3-0 defeat to England in the recentl concluded Supreme Ventures Sunshine Series.
The number four-ranked Jamaicans lost all the games against the world’s third-rate team 53-42, 50-45, and 50-36 at the National Indoor Sports Centre. However, with a young and inexperienced bunch of players, Pitterson-Nattie was more pleased with the progress of the girls.
“I thought in terms of the aggression they were good. The shooting wasn’t bad. They were learning to fight through tough periods (and) they did that a lot and they did that well at times,” she told the Jamaica Observer.
“This series was about us testing the waters and see where we are and we see where we are now we can go further out now. We have the potential and we can extend,” Pitterson-Nattie said.
The former national player was also impressed with the fight spirit of the young players who now move on to preparation for the youth World Championships.
“The second test was a testament to that; it just can get better.”
Meanwhile, England coach Anna Mayes was “delighted” to have taken the series 3-0 and noted further that playing four consistent quarters and remaining consistent throughout will help her team as they continue to prepare for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland and 2015 World Championships in Sydney, Australia.
Mayes told the Observer that while the relative freshness of the Jamaicans was highlighted her team was also fairly young to the international scene.
“I think it’s been quite interesting in the media (how) they’ve talked about the inexperienced Sunshine Girls and if they actually looked at our players how few caps some of them have and actually there were debuts out there in this series.
“I’m really delighted that the players that were less capped (and) actually don’t have that many opportunities, really stepped up and (were) really delighted to get that exposure,” Mayes ended.
