Hit or Miss: Pom Poms – Jonas Brothers
FROM the years 2006-2009, the Jonas Brothers took teenAGE boy-band superstardom to soaring heights that included merchandising, movies, television shows, and high charting music albums supported by arena tours.
The problem during this reign, however, was that the Jonas Brothers’ fans were never focused on the music as much as the group was.
Beneath the bubblegum pop image, the Jonas Brothers were a talented set of musicians that wrote, co-wrote, and co-produced a majority of their own music. This was never appreciated fully, so in 2010 when they released the less gimmicky Lines, Vines, and Trying Times, the album flopped sales-wise. In response, the group took a three-year hiatus, but has now regrouped for their latest effort Pom Poms.
Pom Poms is a Nick Jonas-produced single, led by an uptempo marching band infused instrumentation. The heavy horns, drums, and choir-like background vocals, are perfect for the song’s Pom Poms cheerleading title.
Lyrically, the single features more suggestive lyrics that persons expect from the Jonas Brothers, and this is a reflection of the group having matured during their hiatus, and recognising that a majority of their fans have gotten older and are now in a different age demographic.
Vocally, Joe Jonas handled this aspect of the track, and surprisingly managed not to get lost in the instrument-heavy productions, which is a rarity for persons with such thin vocals.
Pom Poms is a good comeback single for the Jonas Brothers and it will do a lot to shed their Disney-manufactured image built during the last decade. Will everyone like the song? No, but it’s a good start for the reformed group.
