‘Teddy’ Johnson brace eases Wednesday’s fears
LONDON, England (CMC) — Reggae Boy Jermaine Johnson struck twice to fire Sheffield Wednesday to victory and ease their relegation fears, while Trinidad and Tobago international Carlos Edwards scored an injury-time winner to help Ipswich Town snatch full points in the English Championship division here on Saturday.
There were mixed fortunes for former Jamaica striker Kevin Lisbie who scored his 15th goal of the League One season, but later missed a penalty as Leyton Orient lost away at Colchester.
However, no glory followed T&T international Andre Boucaud who was sent off as Notts County went down 1-3 at Bournemouth, also in League One.
At Hillsborough in north England, Johnson found the winner for the hosts, as they snatched a late 3-2 win over Blackburn Rovers.
Jordan Rhodes’s penalty put Blackburn ahead after 12 minutes when goalkeeper Chris Kirkland brought down David Dunn.
Johnson equalised in the 20th with a clinical close-range finish and Leroy Lita’s penalty in the 35th gave the hosts a 2-1 half-time lead.
Scott Dann’s header after 71 minutes levelled things up until Johnson’s brilliant volley, seven minutes later sealed victory for Wednesday who are now three points above the drop zone.
Johnson now has three goals in his last two matches and six overall this season.
Edwards, meanwhile, scored just his second goal of the season as Ipswich remained mid-table in the Championship with an unlikely 1-0 win over Derby at Pride Park.
Jamie Ward’s penalty miss on the stroke of half-time proved costly as Edwards struck a 25-yard rocket deep in injury time.
In east England, Gavin Massey and Drey Wright had Colchester ahead after 24 minutes before Lisbie broke the offside trap to haul the visitors back into the contest in the 37th minute.
The 34-year-old Lisbie had a glorious opportunity to steal a share of the points 12 minutes from time when substitute Shaun Batt was brought down by Bradley Garmston, but his penalty was saved by goalkeeper Sam Walker.
Lisbie has scored six goals in his last eight outings.
