Sunshine Girls trying to avoid sweep
JAMAICA’s world number four ranked Sunshine Girls will try to salvage the Supreme Ventures Sunshine Series against England’s third ranked netballers in the final game of the three-Test series at the National Indoor Sports Centre (NISC) today at 7:30 pm.
England took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series following Wednesday’s 50-45 win after a 53-42 victory on Tuesday.
The previous games have seen the Jamaicans playing inconsistently and Jamaica’s coach Oberon Pitterson-Nattie told the Jamaica Observer that playing four solid quarters will be important today.
“If we do that I don’t see how we could not win. It’s something we have to look in ourselves and when players come in they really have to give the team that punch that they need at the time.”
Winning is important, but Pitterson-Nattie is also using the series as a means to measure the young team’s progress.
“We do hope to have one because it helps in our ranking (but) it’s really just to give the experience because it’s a young team and you want to see where they are at and where you want to go, but it’s really not looking bad.”
England’s coach Anna Mayes will be looking to wrap up the series although a 3-0 win is not the only thing that matters.
“The scoreboard’s not the only measure of our success, but every time we take to the court we expect to win and want to win in terms of demanding from ourselves, but it’s not the only measure of success from this tour,” she said.
Mayes told the Observer the plans for this evening. “Nothing different in terms of the strategies that we’ve been working on throughout this week. I think we were inconsistent and indisciplined. We didn’t stick to our game plan for long enough, hence why we allowed Jamaica to come back at us.
“It’s really important to expose some of our younger, less capped players,” she stated.
The action will begin at 4:00 with a Masters versus Celebrities match-up followed by a shoot off between corporate men and media men.
An entertainment package will follow.
