Links squander chance to book semi-final spot
COOPER’S PEN, Trelawny — Mid-season champions Prospect Links missed the chance to grab the first semi-final place in the Trelawny Football Association Monymusk White Overproof Rum Major League after they were upset 2-1 by Coopers Pen in a third-round cross-zone game at Cooper’s Pen on Thursday.
Prospect Links, the leaders with 26 points, needed just a point to secure their place in the semi-finals, but a goal in each half from Cooper’s Pen, who came into the game in ninth place, wrecked their plans.
Third-place Flames FC could take over the lead today when they take on Clarks Town at Cedric Titus High. Flames are on 24 points, and a win would see them leapfrog both Prospect Links and second-placed Spicy Hill, who are idle after their game against Classic was postponed.
In another game set for this afternoon at Carter Play Field, Granville FC and semi-final hopefuls Duanvale will meet.
On Thursday, Jeffrey Johnson gave Cooper’s Pen the lead, after 15 minutes, before Dwayne Duncan levelled the scores at 1-1 in the 27th minute.
Neiko Stephenson scored the winner for Cooper’s Pen late in the game in the 83rd minute as they inched away from the drop zone.
Also on Thursday, Marlon Henry’s 90th-minute goal gave Exidos So Fresh a 1-0 win over Jackson Town, who are on 10 points with just one game to go and will finish in the bottom two.
