National golfers shine at Jewel Easter Jamboree
SANDALS-BASED Brian Bailey captured the overall championship trophy in the Jewel Easter Jamboree held at the Runaway Bay Golf Club over the Easter weekend. Steady rounds of 75 each day gave Bailey the edge needed to win the last event of the 2012-2013 tournament season.
The tourney was structured according to the team championship segments used in the regional Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships, which is rotated in August of each year to different islands.
Montego Bay-based Keith Stein (155) and Sean Morris (157), who represented Jamaica last year in the Ramon Baez Cup as a team, took first and second place, respectively, in the Hoerman Cup category.
The mid-amateur winner (Ramon Baez) was William ‘Tommy’ Lee, with a total of 156 strokes.
The seniors who came out on top in the Francis & Steele-Perkins leg of the competition were JGA President Wayne Chai Chong, who finished first with 160, four shots ahead of Rory Jardine. Chai Chong and Jardine are former national representatives.
The Super Seniors (Higgs & Higgs) who reigned supreme were Dennis Atkinson on 165, with one shot less than Fred Sutherland.
Jodi Barrow dominated the ladies’ section, shooting rounds of 79 and 81 to take the Champion’s trophy in the George Teale group.
Golfers with handicaps of nine and over competed in the Stableford category. In the 9-3 group, Glen Lawrence placed first with 102 points, Ian Moore topped the 14-18 segment with 108 points, The 19-24 winner was David McNulty with 101 points, while Crystal Gayle took the ladies Stableford with 103 points.
John Dunbar was the one-day winner with 55 points.
The winning Juniors finished the competition as follows: Boys 17 & Under — Zandre Royes (160); Boys 15 & Under — Romaine Evans (164) and Boys 13 & Under — Sebert Walker, Jr (168).
Girls 17 & Under — Sherisse Walker (174); Girls 15 & Under — Kaitlin Robertson (176) and Girls 13 & Under — Kei Harris (168).
